From sweeper to the president: Women got appointed as a panchayat president

Lady was a cleaning staff at the office. She was working for the last 10 years and now holding the position of block panchayat president.

In 30th’December’2020, a woman name A Anandavalli age 46, who use to clean floors and furniture in the panchayat office has taken charge as the block panchayat president in the Kollam district of Kerala. 

Anandavalli belongs to a family of followers of marxism and was dropped out of school. Her husband is an active community party of India (marxism) worker who also works as a painter. 

In 2011, she joined as a part-time with a salary of Rs 2000per month and as now, she was earning the amount of rs 6000. She resigned from the temporary post of sweeper after signing up for the new position of “block panchayat president”.

In the recently concluded local body election, she was elected on a Communist Party of India (Marxist) ticket and appointed to the post of block president in 30th’december’20. There is yet to settle in the impressive change of her destiny.

She said, “she was in for the best moment of her life when her name was announced for the post by the party leadership. My nomination was not much of a surprise, and I was also positive about the results of the election. I wasn't expecting this, but it's one of the best days of my life, and I'm well aware of the incredible responsibility given to me”.

"I was feeling a little nervous. But the leaders of my party and well-wishers encouraged me to take on the new responsibility. I will do my best to build a role model for block panchayat," she said." She won the recent election by 654 votes from the Thalavoor division of the local body. "My duty is now really high. I'm going to work hard to make all the people in my block live better,' she said.

In the times of modern culture, the pinnacle of performance is achieved by society. It feels so graceful to see women not only tried incredibly hard to uplift themselves, but our culture still plays an important role in providing them with opportunities. Then women were not so fortunate and not granted the right to speak or live their lives differently in society, compared to past times.

The prestigious precedent for all those women from lower backgrounds to achieve success was set by A Anandavalli. It also notes that, of course, if one decides to attain a place in society, success can be accomplished by working hard. To take a step forward, all you need to do is "initiate".
